Wise Bear Media Reviews San Francisco Secrets by Greg Messel 5 Paws San Francisco Secrets is the third book in The Sam Slater Mystery Series which, for all intents and purposes, is a highly stylized crime drama in the spirit of a classic Hollywood film noir esque movie Yes, it s a novel, but Messel s writing will transport you back in time to the late 50s for another adventure with Sam Slater and his sometimes partner, but also new finance, Amelia Ryan. This novel picks up right where Deadly Plunge left off Sam and Amelia are secretly engaged so that Amelia can keep her job as a TWA stewardess She is about to embark on a new international route and is clearly torn between her desire to marry Sam against a life long dream to travel abroad. The quasi chaste chemistry between the couple continues to smolder to the point that the interplay has surpassed frustration for loyal readers Luckily, the wait is over as the two protagonists finally wed in a rather amusing attempt at elopement I don t think I m giving anything away by this revelation, as it was clearly time ...

This was a First Read book I won through Goodreads.I said in my review of the first book in this series, Last Of The Seals, that it was a good story ruined by bad writing But I also expressed hope that Messel s writing would improve Sadly, in this third novel in the series, it doesn t He commits the same errors here that he did in that one, bringing what could be another great story to its knees with bad writing The novel again opens a long introduction, this time recapping events in the first two books events he brings up again and again and again in the body of the book.Messel again scatters photos from the late Fifties throughout the book, and provides a page of almanac type data cost of living, top movies and TV shows, Billboard 1 songs from 1958 They do add a sense of the times to the story, but that s something he should deliver through his writing, not rely on photos and data to do.Passive sentences abound throughout the narrative and the prose is plodding with too many sentences starting, Sam said or Sam did The dialog is stiff, unnatural, almost childish, and too often repetitive with two characters parroting each other s lines several times And everyone even the lowbrow thieves and killers speaks as if they ve graduated with a degree in English from a major university.Messel still does too much telling ins...

San Francisco private investigator Sam Slater has been hired by Dr John O Dell to find out who is blackmailing him with a secret from his past But Amelia, Sam s fianc e, is understandably concerned when they discover Dr O Dell s previous investigator is missing and foul play is assumed Meanwhile, Sam is worried about Amelia s new assignment with TWA Not only is she away from home longer now that she flies to Europe, but the pilot doesn t seem to take no for an answer There are secrets all around the couple, including the ones they are keeping The question is whether their relationship can survive when the truth is exposed. The third novel in the series, San Francisco Secrets is probably my favorite so far The characters now have well developed personalities and interactions that keep the story moving I enjoyed watching Sam and Amelia s relationship continu...

Once again, this author has given us a great story I was immediately swept into both cases that Sam gets involved with I was able to read the book fairly quickly This time around, Sam gets a visit from an old flame and ends up having to help her with a case He also gets involved in a black mail case that puts him and Amelia in some sticky situations Let s just say, I d be checking my brake lines before attempting any of those steep San Francisco hills Speaking of San Francisco the author has once again sprinkled photos of life during the 1950 in the area I always enjoy that.We also get to visit with Sam and Amelia I love this couple together Their relationship is tested as Amelia begins her international flights A slime ball captain makes a play for Amelia As a woman in the 2010s, I felt badly for what she has to endure as a stewardes...
