Thank you for the insightI first came across this short story in eighth grade 1971 1972 I was in an accelerated independent reading program in the Chicago public school system I remember being shocked when I read the ending I still remember being very upset I asked the teacher who was the regular classroom teacher to explain the story The curt answer was that if I was in that accelerated and independent reading program I should be figuring that out myself Of course I felt stupid because of this rude interaction My parents said they had never heard of the story or the author It was their belief that school was between you and your teacher I felt I had no one to turn to I came across Shirley Jackson's The Lottery and Other Stories just this morning on the catalog Bas Bleu's website I immediately went to my Kindle and downloaded the book and Ms Thompson's analysis Now being much educated I understood the story perfectly I have forgiven myself for being so ignorant so many years ago Obviously a child would need some explanation to comprehend the multiple factors that make The Lottery so rich and complex It was the next year my freshman year of high school that my English teacher Mrs Alfrances Sharpe lead me to answer all of the millions of uestions I came up with She opened the world of Literature to me and helped me become a life long reader and student of Life I so wish I could go back in time and thank her profusely
