My primary reason for not giving this book a fourth star is that, other than perhaps the young missionary woman, I ended up not caring about any of the characters Half of them were mere caricatures, and the other half just despicable. The story itself was interesting, but wandered all over the place It started off as an apparent tale of greed and theft, with political intrigues, power, abuse of native peoples, evil anthropologists, stubborn sailors, and I m not sure just what, but kept changing My primary reason for not giving this book a fourth star is that, other than perhaps the young missionary woman, I ended up not caring about any of the characters Half of them were mere caricatures, and the other half just despicable. The story itself was interesting, but wandered all over the place It started off as an apparent tale of greed and theft, with political intrigues, power, abuse of native peoples, evil anthropologists, stubborn sailors, and I m not sure just what, but kept changing direction Orth was never believable, especially once the various back stories came out, because the most believable one implied that he would never have cared about the gold Still, the artwork was beautiful, and the comprehensible bits of the story were interesting The epic gun battle part, though, was just bad cinema

Cape Horn is graphic historical fiction, based on events that took place in late 19th Century Tierra Del Fuego It details the intertwined lives of adventurers, missionaries, soldiers, prospectors, and natives, and how small events in their lives explode into violence. The illustrations are gorgeous and provide a strong sense of place The plot is fairly interesting and takes on questions of brutality and racism The primary downside is that the characterizations are spread a little thin, so the Cape Horn is graphic historical fiction, based on events that took place in late 19th Century Tierra Del Fuego It details the intertwined lives of adventurers, missionaries, soldiers, prospectors, and natives, and how small events in their lives explode into violence. The illustrations are gorgeous and provide a strong sense of place The plot is fairly interesting and takes on questions of brutality and racism The primary downside is that the characterizations are spread a little thin, so the overall emotional impact isn t as strong as it could be.Nonetheless, I think Cape Horn is underrated, and would appeal to anyone interested in the region or who appreciates well crafted graphic historical fiction
