During the period of explosive growth in material wealth that made the US the richest most powerful nation on earth there were 2 overshadowing purposes in life for an ambitious business baron purposes that are his whole life from cradle to grave getting on in the world and getting to heavenBUT THE METHODS OF ONE CLOSE THE DOOR OF THE OTHERI paraphrase from two separate chapters in the book but I felt this was the overarching theme and a fabulous theme it was The book was difficult to read very dry fact upon fact written with no variety of sentence structurewriting teacher speaks so the monotony of tone dragged on and on That said however I enjoyed the book veryvery much I seem to be in a learning mood these days and this book taught me so very much This was an explosive time for opportunity and a number of people Frick and Carnegie and the Mellons the Rockefellers later etc these men grabbed life by the tail and hung on through labor union battles and immigration issues through fierce rivalries and competitive competition making names for themselves and making America's industrial foundation Hard to say which of those was a priority to the barrons ; BUT at any given time in this book you hated or cheered for Mr Frick and friendscolleaguesenemiesLiving now in Pittsburgh it was critical to me to know who these men were why their names are on multiple street signs and countless buildings museums foundations and universities here and elsewhere I learned SO much and I am glad I stuck with the bookIf you are curious about the Industrial Revolution and the men who steered it this is your book

Too often profiles of the formerly rich and famous are filtered by their heirs who wish to preserve the history of their philanthropy at the expense of a true assessment of their impact on society In few cases is this better demonstrated than in the case of Frick whose legacy was carefully managed for years by his late daughter Helen Clay Frick Once limited by Miss Frick's litigious nature Schreiner was free in 1995 to publish this well researched look into the life of a complex magnate who will forever be viewed as both a generous patron of the arts and a calculating union buster Great reading for anyone interested in the history of the period or the history of Pittsburgh
