This book is very age appropriate and easy for children to read There are not any big words in the story and most of it is conversation between the girl, Margarita, and her Papa It is interesting to children because it tells a story about Margarita s first day and children can have the book read to them and have some ideas of what their first day is going to be like It allows children to think about how their first day is going to go There is no problem in the story, except for maybe when th This book is very age appropriate and easy for children to read There are not any big words in the story and most of it is conversation between the girl, Margarita, and her Papa It is interesting to children because it tells a story about Margarita s first day and children can have the book read to them and have some ideas of what their first day is going to be like It allows children to think about how their first day is going to go There is no problem in the story, except for maybe when the 1st graders tell Margarita, that she is a kindergarten baby, born in the gravy This upsets her and she tells her Papa about it and he assures her that she was not born in gravy, she was born in Guadalajara The characters are realistic, the descriptions of the things they do, such as stick a bean up their nose, or climb a tree, are things that I can imagine a typical elementary school child doing The illustrations are vivid and correspond to the text Denys Cazet uses lots of colors and has a picture on almost every page The pictures match the story and what is going on at that part of the story The main character in the story is from Mexico, but she is the only one mentioned that is from somewhere other than the United States The names of the other characters do not sound foreign and the pictures do not depict any other characters as foreign This story does not depict any stereotypes Throughout the story, Margarita and Papa talk in Spanish which enhances the book s cultural perspective The lifestyle is not complex the story is just a day in the life of Margarita, who just started kindergarten Denys Cazet isn t of Spanish descent nor was he born outside of the United States He was though a teacher, a librarian, and has children
