Soul Unique by Gun Brooke was an absolute pleasure to read I m not going to provide a synopsis because there already are plenty of those As a person living and working with children and adults on the Autistic Spectrum, I found this book to be very honest and respectful Hayden is written so well Brooke really taps into many of the behaviors and patterns of speech common among people with Asperger s without relying too heavily on stereotypes She makes sure that Hayden is an individual rather Soul Unique by Gun Brooke was an absolute pleasure to read I m not going to provide a synopsis because there already are plenty of those As a person living and working with children and adults on the Autistic Spectrum, I found this book to be very honest and respectful Hayden is written so well Brooke really taps into many of the behaviors and patterns of speech common among people with Asperger s without relying too heavily on stereotypes She makes sure that Hayden is an individual rather than a parody Most importantly she recognizes that Hayden is simply different, not less It is important to note that very few individuals with an Autism Spectrum diagnosis are also savants However, this is a work of fiction and a romance as well so of course it works in this milieu Greer is a delightful character and although she is an ice queen to those in the art world, we see her caring and gentle nature almost immediately The story is told from her point of view in the first tense, which works quite well We see her struggle with her uncertainty about her relationship with Hayden and see that she is just as vulnerable as Hayden. This book could have been very unsettling considering that Greer is noticeably older than Hayden and initially her mentor It could have felt like Greer was predatory, but the author took care of that with some very specific information I won t go on about that, as those would be spoilers.Hayden s treatment by her mother is the prime point of drama in this book and is both heartbreaking and disturbing Again, the author handles this with an authenticity, which is beyond touching.I loved both these women and the story hit all the right notes I know I will return to this book when I feel like I need my spirits lifted

I was expecting an angst fest when I pick this up I love stories that touch my heart, that made my heart ache and tears flow freely This is one of those, but with less angst andsweet and lovely moments The story doesn t do much bullshitting It start off right away with no warm up, it doesn t sidestep and still manages to do it brilliantly It is a little fast pace for a romance novel, not the romance exactly, but the pace of the story itself was fast Nevertheless, it was a wonderful r I was expecting an angst fest when I pick this up I love stories that touch my heart, that made my heart ache and tears flow freely This is one of those, but with less angst andsweet and lovely moments The story doesn t do much bullshitting It start off right away with no warm up, it doesn t sidestep and still manages to do it brilliantly It is a little fast pace for a romance novel, not the romance exactly, but the pace of the story itself was fast Nevertheless, it was a wonderful read.Highly, recommended

Move over Graeme Simsion and your Rosie Project Gun Brooke has given us a interesting look at the life of a lesbian artist with Asperger s.I wasn t sure about this novel initially as the writing seemed stiff and stilted I recognize that the author needed the reader to feel the robotic and logical approach Hayden Rowe took to every conversation with Greer Expressions we take for granted can mystify someone who interprets things literally.I am happy I waded through the first awkward chapters as Move over Graeme Simsion and your Rosie Project Gun Brooke has given us a interesting look at the life of a lesbian artist with Asperger s.I wasn t sure about this novel initially as the writing seemed stiff and stilted I recognize that the author needed the reader to feel the robotic and logical approach Hayden Rowe took to every conversation with Greer Expressions we take for granted can mystify someone who interprets things literally.I am happy I waded through the first awkward chapters as I was rewarded with a sweet love story and an honest and interesting look at a couple who learn to overcome their differences and find a connection most of us can only dream of.Kudos to Brooke for a well rounded cast of characters, a good adversary and enough knowledge of the art world to pull the reader into her description of the the paintings and the visual display of emotions Hayden would not have otherwise been able to express.Add in a very hot sex scene or two and this novel was a pleasure to read

3.4 stars It was intriguing to read a story about falling in love with someone who is autistic Granted, Hayden is extremely high functioning, but her social anxieties makes things challenging for the couple The narrative was enjoyable and fast paced, so I didn t get bored With that being said, I personally am not of fan of Brook s writing The characters felt one dimensional and lacked any real substance It s too simplistic Even the mother who is made to be the villain is not that interesti 3.4 stars It was intriguing to read a story about falling in love with someone who is autistic Granted, Hayden is extremely high functioning, but her social anxieties makes things challenging for the couple The narrative was enjoyable and fast paced, so I didn t get bored With that being said, I personally am not of fan of Brook s writing The characters felt one dimensional and lacked any real substance It s too simplistic Even the mother who is made to be the villain is not that interesting This story is highly rated so I was a bit disappointed Overall I d give it a meh Perhaps I m being a bit critical, but this one didn t do it for me

I m gonna come clean and say I ve been looking at this book for a while now, the 9.99 always stopping me But I m in such a rut reading wise right now that I decided that no better time like the present, since I really really wanted to like a book, any book The Good The subject a brilliant artist on the autistic spectrum falling in love with her mentor and savior intrigued me from the get go Characters on the spectrum are difficult to portray believably as real people with authentic fee I m gonna come clean and say I ve been looking at this book for a while now, the 9.99 always stopping me But I m in such a rut reading wise right now that I decided that no better time like the present, since I really really wanted to like a book, any book The Good The subject a brilliant artist on the autistic spectrum falling in love with her mentor and savior intrigued me from the get go Characters on the spectrum are difficult to portray believably as real people with authentic feelings without going overboard by either trying to cure them or turning them into a caricature of a person Ms Brooke manages to not do either and creates an authentic character, true to her own self The world of art and the talent described is always a joy to read for me, especially since the author does a great job at research and characterization or technique, without going overboard on details The Bad The conflict of the book felt forced Yes, parents have issues dealing with children who are autistic, or have Asperger s or have social difficulties, but the portrayal of the mother here was slightly too much For a shrewd and savvy woman she sure couldn t grasp her own good fortune After a fast paced start, the book s second half lags a bit and I was anticipating some major catastrophe, as it seemed the narrative was building towards something The Special I have a niece who s on the spectrum and the portrayal of Hayden read very true to me, including the mannerisms and the thought process, major kudos
