Goldmage s standout feature has to be the magic I ve recently been on a writing podcast lecture binge and one of the early topics that came up in Writing Excuses was the idea that magic can be madeinteresting by having a cost Goldmage does this better than any other fantasy novel I ve read In Goldmage, the cost of magic is tied to your life, your health, and your sanity, but always in discreet ways that feel farimpactful than vague lovecraftian warnings of madness The culture and Goldmage s standout feature has to be the magic I ve recently been on a writing podcast lecture binge and one of the early topics that came up in Writing Excuses was the idea that magic can be madeinteresting by having a cost Goldmage does this better than any other fantasy novel I ve read In Goldmage, the cost of magic is tied to your life, your health, and your sanity, but always in discreet ways that feel farimpactful than vague lovecraftian warnings of madness The culture and economy that grew around this system of magic is fascinating Of course, all of that worldbuilding is secondary to plot and characters, both of which are pageturningly compelling, but the price of magic and it s effects on those characters is by far the most interesting part of Goldmage Vague ending Spoilers below view spoiler I can see why some people are very upset by the ending, and it s absolutely not a happy one, but it felt very appropriate The standout idea behind Goldmage is that magic has a price that will be with you forever Meea s father is introduced as a husk of who he might have once been, and every bit of exposition hammers home the idea that almost every mage is wrung out entirely in their service to the Temple or Crown I think the reason that it feels unfair is that the protagonist is not at fault for the price she has to pay, but it didn t feel like it came out of left field hide spoiler Overall, Goldmage is a good book with some great ideas 4 5

I agree with most of the other reviews here for the most part, but I don t think the ending was bad It was tragic, but not every story has to have a happy ending, it s too predictable and far fetched if they are The world building was good and the characters seemed to work as full well rounded people, although most people seem to like the main character instantly which is a bit odd I d love to readstories set in this world though, the magic system is very well thought out in a way tha I agree with most of the other reviews here for the most part, but I don t think the ending was bad It was tragic, but not every story has to have a happy ending, it s too predictable and far fetched if they are The world building was good and the characters seemed to work as full well rounded people, although most people seem to like the main character instantly which is a bit odd I d love to readstories set in this world though, the magic system is very well thought out in a way that allows for the fantastical to be commonplace, and yet still be very limited in use so it can t just fix everything

I liked the worldbuilding, and the way that exposition was given via flashbacks to mage children s lessons rather than via straight up narration A happy ending would have been nice if it had fit, but I think there were a lot of signals that this was not a good world to live in, as a mage, and I wasn t surprised that things couldn t turn out well for everyone I was actually half expecting an outright death to be in the cards.

A lot of the worldbuilding in this story is confusing and takes a while to be explained I think it would benefit from a little glossary or something so mage types and all that are easy to look up in case one forgets what each type is and does but aside from that the worldbuilding is beautiful and I wish there wasof this verse. Also this story is amazing and beautiful and tragic I m super upset about the ending like seriously its super sadmaking

Interesting worldbuilding, as always from Alicorn s works And the plot had some nice confluences of apparently unrelated things described earlier But I didn t like that I never completely understood the redmage s unusual reaction, or the politics behind some events This lingering confusion kind of spoiled the end of it for me.

So this started out a 4 star, because the world and the characters are great, but it s now hovering around a 3 because I AM SUBTRACTING STARS FOR EVERY TIME I THINK ABOUT THE ENDING AND BECOME FURIOUS ALL OVER AGAIN.
