As much as I loved Tiny Pencil III IV this second volume was a bit disappointing Following the lead of anthologies like McSweeney's and Hi Fructose the 20 issue with a 'Monsters Mammals and Mars' theme came not in the usual 8 x 11 perfectbound format but as a boxed set including stickers cards dice and a cool 4 pencil Derwent set which would be awesome if I didn't have about 60 or 70 fancy pencil sets This issue is divided into 3 stapled booklets in a 55 x 8 format which is less than ideal for art books Or activity booksThe main problem is the 'all ages activity' theme Like the other instalments it's a numbered limited edition release Since 'Tiny Empire' is based in the UK the shipping makes the overall price somewhere around 45 CAD so it was never truly intended for children Much of it is cheesy kids stories too easy crossword puzzles tiny coloring pages none of it is all that interesting and I'm sure as hell not feeling compelled to scribble in itI didn't like the line up change for 20 since most of the names I liked from III and IV were absent and now I know why Perhaps It's made up of aspiring kiddie book illustrators treating this issue like a portfolio for potential publishers I've come to expect better from Amber Hsu and her cohorts so I was uite let down But there's still plenty to love here some fantastic art scattered amongst the lame puzzles; and the two issues that follow this one are amongst my favorite finds of 2015 so I'm not concerned about any deterioration in uality Tiny Pencil V will still be a must buy for me More Art book Reviews More Comic book Reviews More Novel Reviews
