I hate to be the first to renew this book because I think I had an allergic reaction to it I was incredibly excited to read it because it promised a linkage between family systems nuclear, stem, communitarian, matrileal, patrilineal, endogamous, exogamous, monogomous, polygynous, etc to historical outcomes The author seems to be an expert in these family systems and their outcomes and has written a few books on the topic There is a cool map showing these different systems in Eurasia from hi I hate to be the first to renew this book because I think I had an allergic reaction to it I was incredibly excited to read it because it promised a linkage between family systems nuclear, stem, communitarian, matrileal, patrilineal, endogamous, exogamous, monogomous, polygynous, etc to historical outcomes The author seems to be an expert in these family systems and their outcomes and has written a few books on the topic There is a cool map showing these different systems in Eurasia from his prior book and he uses it to suggest that the nuclear family was the original family type because its found on the periphery England for example and has basically been pushed out by family types that were developedrecently with the growth of civilization and urbanization such as the patrilineal stem family in Germany and Japan and the patrilineal communitarian family that is now found in China, India, Middle East Fertile Crescent, Russia where urban civilization is oldest The most interesting insights this lens allows is why communism is easy to accept in China Russia India Middle East because it fits with the family system and how the stem family creates the same kind of economy where people focus on perfecting existing systems and drive to power younger sons go off into the military, the state is an extension of the father figure in Japan and Germany and how theprimitive nuclear family systems in England and the US lead to democracy and economic vitality There is some discussion of the interaction between religion such as Protestanism and Catholicism and the different family types and ultimately the author believes what created the takeoff in Europe was literacy since it literally makes you smarter He makes the argument that the Stem Family lead to Protestantism which lead to literacy All this is interesting but in the first half of the book where these areas are covered, the writing is dense and hard to understand maybe because English is not his first language and there are lots of technical tangents I had to really slog through it since this topic is fascinating to me The most I really picked up was the different family types that are out there and the endogamous marry within cousin group and exogamous always marry outside cousin group nature of different family types The second half of the book went off the rails It seemed muchlike rating than academic writing There was a rant that basically painted all Americans as racist There was ranting against Trump Some ranting for Trump policies There was ranting pro Brexit I believe one of the rants was against higher education There was ranting against Germany letting in immigrants I was looking for a serious treatment on family systems and culture history and I was not prepared for the crazy Its not that I am against his political views, its that they don t belong in this type of book My policy of always finishing books no matter what was severely tested I made it through hoping there was some good stuff at the end, but it just became crazier and crazier So I give it a 5 for the promise of what this topic could be, a 3.5 for what was actually written about it, and a 1 2 for the crazy I would not recommend it but I would very much like to hear of a better book on this subject
