The second story in Steve Redwood s collection of twenty six short stories just might contain the best opening sentence I ve ever read The nightmare began again, although no one could have known it, when Hemera took her daughter to the pet shop to buy her a Betelgeusian squoggle catcher for her tenth cloneday What can I say It stays that astonishing, that wonderfully silly, for the next ten pages, and your sides are sore with laughter by the end of it That story The Road To Damascus is The second story in Steve Redwood s collection of twenty six short stories just might contain the best opening sentence I ve ever read The nightmare began again, although no one could have known it, when Hemera took her daughter to the pet shop to buy her a Betelgeusian squoggle catcher for her tenth cloneday What can I say It stays that astonishing, that wonderfully silly, for the next ten pages, and your sides are sore with laughter by the end of it That story The Road To Damascus is not self important heavyweight Sci Fi of the space opera variety, taking itself way too seriously, but rather it is witty, thought provoking, mind expanding stuff, self referential and light hearted, and fun to read But did I say light hearted To his credit Steve Redwood does not take himself at all seriously, but nonetheless this very diverse collection shows a great range of imagination, moods and styles, and has its dark moments too, troubling ideas left skulking in the corners of your cerebrum after the pages slither shut.To demonstrate Redwood s range I should cite the difference between stories like A Helping Hand , a brilliant, almost existential exploration of how the constant presence on a street corner of one urban beggar can progressively erode a shopper s sanity, and Epiphany In The Sun where a disagreement on how to react to a dying dog by a roadside provokes the unravelling of a couple s entire relationship, with Going Back in which a rapist attempts to go back in time to undo his crime with unexpected results Of course, in a collection this diverse not every story works for me, but I suspect that each reader will cite different favourites and editing some stories out would only have reduced this book s multifaceted power as a portrait of the artist as a mirror ball Along with skilfully imaginative explorations of the implications of time travel and cloning, there are alien infiltrations, euthanasia, future wars between sexes, and , but always interspersed with healthy digressions into the purely absurd and utterly outrageous The back cover mentions political incorrectness, and it s no empty promise I started making a mental list of those who could conceivably be offended but stopped when I realised that even being Scottish I was on it The Catholic church, and religion generally, comes in for at least its fair share of roughing up, indeed its cassocks and habits gets quite thoroughly groped, and yet I detect notes of residual sympathy beneath the surface Redwood may be a bull in your mental china shop, but he only really wants to lick your hand.Sexist attitudes to women get aired by various characters, and its sobering to realise how seldom sheer maleness is allowed to be expressed in contemporary fiction these days, as if writers are now living in a parallel universe where Germaine Greer is Priminister not a bad idea, but not the case Redwood writes with an honesty and a lack of self consciousness, which makes other writers look scared and obsequious But if I tell you incest and necrophilia find their way in here and there, then you might get the wrong idea Redwood uses humour very skilfully to entertain us and slip all manner of indiscretions and provocations into our minds while he has us beautifully off guard This book is like an evening with your favourite pub raconteur, you come away invigorated with laughter, enthralled by strange ideas, glad your maiden aunt wasn t there, and puzzled that you can t tell it like Steve does Of course you can t You ve just got to buy the man a pint And read his book

A highly entertaining collection of short stories, of which I ve been lucky enough to read an early version Each is almost completely different to the rest, except for the fact that they re all so good Some are funny, others deadly serious some are bafflingly erudite, others are fluffy confections Some, like Sanctuary , seem serious at first, but end up being extremely silly in a good way Damaged opens the collection, taking us with John William Smith on his visit to the library he A highly entertaining collection of short stories, of which I ve been lucky enough to read an early version Each is almost completely different to the rest, except for the fact that they re all so good Some are funny, others deadly serious some are bafflingly erudite, others are fluffy confections Some, like Sanctuary , seem serious at first, but end up being extremely silly in a good way Damaged opens the collection, taking us with John William Smith on his visit to the library he s there to renew his most recent loan The library shelves were unusually well stocked that day, with golden skinned women dangling languid bare legs over the edges If that gets you thinking of sauce and Sidney James, stop right there Steve Redwood s writing is characterised by a real fury at the way men treat women. For another example see Epiphany in the Sun , a non fantasy story about a couple driving through Turkey They find a dying dog and John insists on trying to find help for it The disregard he shows for his wife is appalling, yet totally believable Men do ignore their wives in this way all the time, and it clearly makes Redwood angry Evenscathing of our fallible gender is Expiry Date , where Peter receives a post Advent calendar that catalogues a history of one man s dismaying behaviour towards women Other interesting stories here include Going Back , a new spin on time travel I didn t think there were any to be found at this point , which again hinges on the evil that men do Fowl Play , a tribute to Rhys Hughes interesting, since I read that author s The Smell of Telescopes at the same time as this book, and the two complemented each other very well and A Helping Hand , about one man s war with a beggar A particular favourite of mine was The Heisenberg Mutation where Charles Algernon Soames, who occasionally lent money to the Sultan of Brunei , begins to flatten Another was Two Legs Bad a Love Story , which does, as its subtitle promises, feature unusual sexual practices , though not the kind you might expect. Many of these stories previously appeared in small press magazines, like Midnight Street, Polluto, Roadworks and Whispers of Wickedness, and Redwood is a small press editor s dream a fine writer with big ideas who doesn t quite fit established pigeonholes But what s good for the small press isn t necessarily good for him He deserves to be better known, and I hope this collection will do the trick
