Eventually, after a successful completion of his college education, the torments that have festered and lingered from his lover mother s absence send Joel on a quest to Paris seeking to track her down that he might finally unleash upon her in person all of the bitterness and bile that have been flowering nurtured by abandonment deep inside the details of her residence having become unknown in the interval of silence Happenstance intervenes again in a reunion with Rory after a chance meeting at a Spanish airport, and the passage of time evinces little effect as they settle, quite heatedly, into a physical relationship with Joel soon confirming what Rory had long suspected about the truth of his incestuous past When their combined sleuthing discovers that Leila now lives a quiet existence in Dijon, Joel gets his desired confrontation buts it s with a Leila he barely recognizes She has become shriveled and lessened in every discernible way physically, emotionally, and, most shockingly of all, spiritually This woman whose core was ever aflame, able to transmute her inner heat to sparks tangibly affective upon all males in proximity, who possessed a ceaseless belief in the primacy and necessity of being true to one s inner passions has seemingly had all of the engines of her sensual identity doused, become soot and char, leaving a hollowed maternal vessel that appears prim, subdued, and tamed Everything that Max had hoped for, but failed to achieve, Joel was able to effect through the combination of her sudden flight and his subsequent silence And yet this notwithstanding, her presence worms inexorably into Joel s mind until he is forced to acknowledge his real goal in effecting this reunion that he desires to once again take his mother as his lover, deeming the fact that he is now both a consenting adult and the pursuer as being sufficient to make the difference and allow this renewed incestuous affair to have a happy ending. It doesn t.I liked this book Whiteson takes a subject matter that isn t often attempted and made it highly erotic, even scorching in his depiction of the illicit duo in the course of Joel s sexual initiation and then cranks it to extremes, yet all the while by way of convincing characters, with believable motives, doing dreadful things, performing immoral acts, hurting those they love the most, in the vain pursuit of stamping one s identity upon a world that is mierda absolutamente pura While his positioning of a stern, hypocritical, and puritanical patriarchal authority set ever against that it might belittle, break, and bury a feminine desire of musky and dusky sensuality, that is earth old and the primary fuel of our subconscious needs and desires, that finds in what this authority forbids as taboo the most rewarding and enticing of bodily pleasures and satiations might be a tad hackneyed in theme and constitution, it is executed to great and convincing effect Leila ruins her relationship with her son in abandoning herself to those inner fires, and tutoring her child into unleashing the same, but this is in part because of how her Jewishness, her womanliness, her own dreams and desires, were warped and damaged by the impatience and subsumptive demands of Max and his society whereas her guilt for her transgressive actions, as well as a realization that our spirits can only endure a portion of that it hungers for realized, can exist and flower for but a brief spell and at certain points, and that attempts to rekindle such potent, earthy magics cannot ever have a happy ending that we are possessed of two strains of selfishness, that which hobbles ourselves and those we love, and another that serves paradoxically to succor our lives in the strictures of relationships reveal that she was able to harness a wisdom and understanding from what engendered within Joel only a deep bitterness and jealousy. This is not to excuse the way in which she manipulated the ardent but budding sexuality of a vulnerable boy who also happened to be her child but rather that we are all unique individuals, who react to, and learn from, things in different ways She has had a major part, and responsibility, for the deterioration of her filial relationship but by the time the end of the book has been reached, and notwithstanding that Joel is still a young man, it s a curious juxtaposition between the offensiveness and delusional quality of his own self justifications and manipulations, and the quiet dignity with which his mother responds to them and recognizes in them traces of her own warped self deceptions After that immolating reunion, the bleakness sets in to stay we might even note that Joel s beloved grandfather, and his caustic, nihilistic attitude, have won the day It s a sin what Leila pushed upon, and allowed to happen, with her son but it s also one in that everyone, it seems, must be broken by the world, and what was golden be eventually revealed as brittle and fragile that our desires can mar and damage whether achieved or subsumed, attended to or denied Whiteson did his level best to tell that tale in an unusual and interesting manner, evoking a range of emotional reactions in which melancholy trumps them all My kind of book, that

Even though this was a novel of incest between a mother and son, Whiteson managed to evoke deep feelings for the Mother and son As the sensuality and highly charged sexuality of the Mother came through for her son, the reader was left realizing that she was not only uncontrollable but uncontainable in her sexual appetite for her son Her husband also talks about trying to dumb down her sexuality early on in their marriage The sexuality was always there, simmering below the surface. It got tran Even though this was a novel of incest between a mother and son, Whiteson managed to evoke deep feelings for the Mother and son As the sensuality and highly charged sexuality of the Mother came through for her son, the reader was left realizing that she was not only uncontrollable but uncontainable in her sexual appetite for her son Her husband also talks about trying to dumb down her sexuality early on in their marriage The sexuality was always there, simmering below the surface. It got transferred to her son Over the years, the incest became love, the victims became lovers We were left with 2 people who didn t know their roles any The Mother ruined them both for other lovers The story of incest became a love story Leon Whiteson pulled it off by digging deep into the psyche of the Mother thereby taking the reader on a mesmerizing journey from illicit love to eternal love Even though it was about incest, it was beautifully written and gave us a perspective of both people and why and how
